Dr. Gina Anderson Named to 2026 South Carolina 500 for Leadership in Technology

An unexpected recognition by SCBIZ celebrates the CEO and co-founder of Luma Brighter Learning and her commitment to changing lives through learning.

I didn’t apply. I didn’t pay. And I certainly didn’t see this coming. ❤️

Sometimes the most meaningful moments in life are the ones we never planned. On October 28, 2026, I walked through my front door after a long day of travel from Pennsylvania. Between flight delays, a busy schedule, and the exhaustion that comes with traveling, I was ready to be home. But something had been on my mind since the night before. I had opened a fortune cookie with a simple message: “Good luck is on the way.”

I kept wondering what that little message might mean. At first, I thought it might have something to do with an exciting new announcement we are preparing to make at Luma Brighter Learning. Then I thought about a gentleman I had met at the airport who shared that he had lost his wife six months earlier. We connected through an unexpected conversation about building machines, and he may even have an idea to help with a robot I’ve been trying to invent. I love how life brings people together in the most unexpected ways, and that conversation alone felt like a little bit of good luck.

But when I arrived home, another surprise was waiting for me. Sitting on my counter were four copies of SCBIZ magazine. As I opened one and began looking through the pages, I discovered my name. I had been recognized as one of the 2026 South Carolina 500 honorees in the technology category, an annual recognition by SCBIZ celebrating influential leaders helping shape the future of South Carolina.

WOW. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. After a long day of traveling, I certainly wasn’t looking my best, but my husband and Luma co-founder, Scott Anderson, captured the moment as I excitedly opened the magazine and showed him what I had discovered. I’m grateful he did because some of life’s most meaningful moments aren’t the perfectly polished ones. They’re the authentic moments that remind us how far we’ve come, how much we’ve experienced, and how many people have helped us along the way.

What Is the South Carolina 500 Recognition?

The South Carolina 500, presented by SCBIZ, recognizes 500 influential and accomplished professionals across South Carolina who are contributing to the state’s economy, business community, and future. The annual recognition highlights leaders across diverse industries, including technology, who are helping drive innovation, strengthen organizations, and create opportunities throughout the state.

Being named a 2026 South Carolina 500 honoree in technology is particularly meaningful to me because technology and learning science have been central to my life’s work. As a learning scientist, entrepreneur, and CEO and co-founder of Luma Brighter Learning, I’ve dedicated my career to understanding how people learn and how we can use that understanding to improve lives, organizations, and society.

I’m proud to represent South Carolina’s technology community, but what makes this recognition especially meaningful is the mission behind the company Scott and I have built. We didn’t start Luma Brighter Learning to win awards or receive recognition. We started it because we believed learning could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Building a South Carolina Technology Company With a Purpose

When Scott and I founded Luma Brighter Learning, we started with one belief: When people learn, their lives improve, and so does society. That belief became the foundation of our company and continues to guide the decisions we make, the technology we develop, and the people we serve.

Today, Luma Brighter Learning is a four-time Inc. 5000 fastest-growing company, earning recognition each year from 2023 through 2026. Headquartered in the Charleston, South Carolina, region, Luma develops connected enterprise learning technology designed to help organizations improve workforce safety, compliance, employee engagement, and performance. Our Connected Enterprise Learning Platform combines learning science, microlearning, data, and technology to support employees and organizations across transportation, logistics, and other industries where learning can have a direct impact on people’s lives.

As a learning scientist, I have always believed that technology should serve people, not the other way around. Technology can create access to learning, connect employees with meaningful experiences, and help organizations better understand where people need support. However, technology alone doesn’t change behavior. Meaningful learning requires connection, relevance, engagement, and opportunities to apply what we’ve learned. It is why I did my TedX on the power of presence.

This is why our work at Luma extends beyond simply delivering training or tracking course completions. We believe completion is not the same thing as learning, and learning is not the same thing as performance. Our goal is to help organizations connect these elements so that learning leads to meaningful improvements in how people work, grow, and live.

The People Behind the Recognition

Building a technology company is rarely a straight path. There have been long days, difficult decisions, uncertain moments, and plenty of obstacles along the way. Scott and I have experienced the excitement of growth and the challenges that come with building something from the ground up. We’ve learned that success requires persistence, resilience, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when the path isn’t clear.

But one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that no meaningful achievement happens alone. Every milestone Luma Brighter Learning has reached reflects the dedication of our employees, the trust of our clients, the support of our partners, and the encouragement of people who have believed in our mission. Our team brings incredible talent, passion, and commitment to the work we do, and our clients give us the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of their employees every day.

This recognition may have my name attached to it, but it represents something much bigger than one person. It represents the company Scott and I have built alongside an extraordinary team and the community of people who have helped make our journey possible. I am especially grateful to Scott, who has been beside me through the challenges and celebrations, and who happened to be there to capture this unexpected moment.

We are built by people, and that will always be one of the things I am most proud of.

A Message to Women in Technology and Anyone With a Dream

As a woman in technology, a learning scientist, and an entrepreneur, I hope this recognition encourages someone who has a dream but isn’t sure whether to pursue it. Perhaps you’re considering starting a business, developing an innovative technology, or finding a new way to solve a problem that matters to you. Maybe you’re already on that journey, but the challenges seem bigger than the opportunities, and you’re wondering whether all the effort is worth it.

I understand those feelings because building a company requires believing in something long before you have evidence that it will succeed. There will be people who question your ideas, moments when progress feels painfully slow, and days when you wonder whether you’re making the right decisions. But there will also be moments that remind you why you started, and sometimes those moments arrive when you least expect them.

South Carolina is home to entrepreneurs, innovators, educators, and business leaders who are working to create a stronger future for our communities. I’m proud to be part of that community and to contribute through learning science, workforce development, and education technology. I’m also proud to call South Carolina home and to see the opportunities being created by people who are willing to pursue ideas, take risks, and build something meaningful.

If there’s one message I hope someone takes from this recognition, it’s that you don’t have to know exactly how your journey will unfold before you begin. You don’t need to have every answer, and you certainly don’t need to wait until everything is perfect. What matters is having the courage to start, the persistence to continue, and a purpose that keeps you moving forward.

Success Is About More Than Recognition

As I reflect on those four magazines sitting on my counter, I keep coming back to how unexpected the entire experience was. I hadn’t applied for the recognition, I hadn’t paid for it, and I had no idea it was coming. I was simply returning home after another day of doing work I love, connecting with people, and trying to make a difference.

The recognition is an incredible honor, but it also reminds me that success isn’t measured only by how quickly a company grows, the awards it receives, or the technology it develops. Success is also measured by the people whose lives improve because of the work we choose to do. It’s measured by the relationships we build, the opportunities we create, and the positive impact we leave behind.

I am deeply grateful to SCBIZ for recognizing me among the 2026 South Carolina 500 leaders in technology and for celebrating the individuals helping shape our state’s future. I am equally grateful to our Luma Brighter Learning team, our clients, our partners, our families, and everyone who has supported our journey.

And to anyone reading this who has a dream, I hope this story serves as a reminder to keep pursuing it. You never know what might be waiting around the next corner, who you might meet along the way, or when an unexpected moment will remind you just how far you’ve come.

When Scott and I started Luma Brighter Learning, our mission was to use learning to change lives. That mission hasn’t changed, and neither has our belief in the potential of people.

We are just getting fired up! ❤️🌈
